Your Safety in Egypt

Is Egypt safe for tourists? Are there a lot of military checkpoints?

You will see a lot of military and police presence throughout your travels in Egypt. Sometimes they are carrying large guns and can look intimidating. You will regularly see Tourist Police at Egypt’s main tourist sites and you may be required to pass through metal detectors and allow them to search your bags. Keep in mind that they are there to ensure your safety. Your tour guides will deal with them on your behalf should any issues arise. Because tourism is one of Egypt’s highest sources of revenue, Egypt allocates a lot of resources to promoting and maintaining a safe and secure experience, especially for its guests.

Is theft an issue that I should be worried about?

While theft is not common, please exercise common sense, especially when walking around the Khan and other markets and crowded places. When traveling, carry your money in a money belt or some other secure bag such as a pouch that you wear around your neck under your clothes. The idea is to carry your money in a manner so that it would be difficult for someone to access and in a way that you would notice if someone tried to steal from you. Every hotel and cruise ship accommodation provides a safe with a programmable code either in your room or at the front desk. Please use it. That is the best place to store your valuables, including your passport.
